Oral pathology is concerned with the inside of the mouth. Normally the inside of the mouth should be a smooth and coral pink colored special type of skin. Any change in the surface or color of the skin inside the mouth is normally an indication and warning sign for a pathological process. Oral pathology is concerned with the rapid diagnosis and treatment for the pathological conditions. The most serious is oral cancer.

If you are concerned about the color of the skin or the surface texture, you can ask yourself the following questions. They are warning signs of oral cancer and a prelude to serious cancerous growth:

  • Do you have reddish patches in your mouth?
  • Do you have whitish patches in your mouth?
  • Do you have sores in your mouth that don’t heal?
  • Do you have any lumps or a lump in your mouth that does not heal?
  • Do you have any lumps or a lump in your mouth that bleeds easily
  • Do you have thickening of the skin inside your mouth?
  • Do you have an ongoing sore throat?
  • Do you have ongoing hoarseness?
  • Do you have difficulty chewing and/or swallowing?
  • Do you have pain when chewing and/or swallowing?

Any of these symptoms can seen or felt on the lips, palate, gum tissue around the teeth, the cheeks, tongue, the face and/or around the neck. It is important to note that pain is not always associated with oral pathology. Interestingly, pain is not associated with oral cancer. That being said, a patient with pain of the neck and face or oral pain without any real obvious reason may also be at risk of oral cancer.

Because the mouth is an important indicator of your general health, it is important to check the inside of your mouth on a regular basis. If you have suspicious lumps or sores, it is important for you to contact Dr. Stewart & Dr. Arango Oral Surgery and Dr Michael Stewart immediately – you don’t need a dentist to refer you and we always welcome walk-ins.
